So you want a tattoo?
In the world of modern tattooing there are two main choices that you have to consider. Do you want a custom tattoo, or do you want a pre-designed or “flash” tattoo? Let’s take a look at the options.

A custom tattoo is a tattoo that either you, or the tattoo artist design to fit you specifically. The tattoo will have some of the personality of both you and the artist. If done properly it will accentuate the flow and form of the body, as well as capturing the imagery properly. A solid idea of what you want captured is helpful when designing a custom tattoo.

The other end of the spectrum is pre-designed, or “flash” tattoos. Many shops will have designs at the shop from which to choose. “Flash” designs are fully rendered drawings or artwork available to pick from. Helpful for those that are less artistically inclined, or those seeking the tattoo experience, which may not be able to describe fully what they see in their mind.

There are also online sites that have designs available for purchase. Many of these designs can be tattooed “as-is”, or brought to the tattoo artist as reference for a full custom piece to be designed around.  Click Here!

Flash tattoos are generally smaller and of a simplified design. The bigger the tattoo gets and the more detail that is incorporated, the more a custom tattoo approach applies. The design of the tattoo also dictates the size it should or needs to be. Too much detail in a small tattoo leads to a fuzzy tattoo down the road. Moreover, if the tattoo is too small for a particular body part it can look out of place, or awkward.

You are getting a TATTOO, an image that if applied correctly, will last FOREVER. Make sure to take the direction of the tattoo artist into consideration when choosing a final design.

AS far as the artist/shop are concerned, there are a multitude of artists and shops from which to choose. Every artist has a different style and personality. And every shop has a different vibe to it.

Before being tattooed, it is a good idea to go in and get a feel for the shop and the artists in it. Are they courteous and professional? Is the shop clean and presentable? Every artist should have an example of their work, a portfolio, to demonstrate skill and style.

The shop should be health board certified. When you enter the shop, be polite, but feel free to ask questions. Understand that the artists are professionals, they want to make sure that both they as the artist, and you as the client are happy with the experience.

Pricing will vary from artist to artist, and shop to shop. A little research can help in getting a sense of what caliber shop you are looking for. If you have a budget, explain you budget to the artist and they will more than likely work with you. Try to remain calm if suffering from sticker shock, over reaction is frowned upon. Tattoos can range in price from as low as $50 and upwards into the thousands.

If the tattoo is too expensive, politely let them know, and see if there is something that can be modified about the design or location of the tattoo. Making a scene is a good way to be asked to leave. But keep in mind “good tattoos aren’t cheap, cheap tattoos aren’t good”

Whichever direction you take, whether it is a simple “flash” piece, or a full custom tattoo, keep in mind that a tattoo is a permanent piece of your body.
